Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred to the Momella Gate (1,500 meters/4,920 feet), the starting point of your trek. The drive will take approximately 1.5 hours from Arusha. Upon arrival at the gate, you will go through the park formalities, and after a short introduction to your crew and trekking route, you will begin your ascent.

The trek from Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (2,500 meters/8,200 feet) is relatively moderate. Expect to hike for around 4 to 5 hours, covering a distance of approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles). The first part of the trek will take you through lush montane forest, with a variety of flora and fauna such as monkeys, birds, and butterflies. As you ascend, the forest begins to open up, offering scenic views of the surrounding valleys and distant peaks. The trek is gradual, but it provides a solid start to acclimatize to the altitude.

You will arrive at Miriakamba Hut in the afternoon, where you can rest and enjoy the serene environment. The hut is equipped with basic facilities, and you will spend the night here. Dinner will be served, and you can relax before an early night in preparation for the next day’s hike.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

On Day 2, you will continue your trek from Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3,570 meters/11,710 feet), a 5 to 6-hour trek covering about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles). The trail climbs steadily through a mixture of alpine forest and moorland, with occasional breaks in the canopy that provide expansive views of the mountain and the surrounding area.

As you gain altitude, the vegetation changes, and you will start to see the unique alpine plant life of Mount Meru, including giant heathers and lobelias. The higher you go, the more spectacular the views become, especially when looking towards Mount Kilimanjaro to the northeast. The last section of the hike is steeper but offers breathtaking panoramas.

Upon arrival at Saddle Hut, you will have time to rest and acclimatize. The hut is situated just below the crater rim, and it is the final resting point before your summit attempt. After settling in, you will have dinner and rest in preparation for an early start the next day to reach the summit.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Hut (Summit) and Descent to Miriakamba Hut

On Day 3, your trek begins early with a pre-dawn departure from Saddle Hut. The trek to the summit, Socialist Hut (4,566 meters/14,980 feet), will take around 6 to 7 hours for the ascent and about 3 to 4 hours for the descent.

The first part of the hike is challenging and involves a steep climb through rocky terrain and volcanic ash. As the sun begins to rise, you’ll be treated to magnificent views of the surrounding landscapes, including the remnants of the Meru Crater and the jagged cliffs of the mountain. The altitude begins to make the climb more strenuous, but the effort is worth it once you reach the Socialist Hut, located near the summit.

At the summit, you will enjoy unparalleled views of the Meru Crater, which is a collapsed caldera, and the dramatic cliff faces that drop hundreds of meters below. The sense of accomplishment is overwhelming as you reach the highest point on Mount Meru.

After spending some time at the summit and taking in the stunning views, you’ll begin your descent back to Miriakamba Hut. The descent is less strenuous but can be hard on the knees due to the steepness of the terrain. Expect to take about 4 hours to return to Miriakamba Hut, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate and Return to Arusha

On the final day, you will begin your descent from Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate. The trek takes around 4 hours and covers a distance of 10 kilometers (6 miles). As you descend through the lower forests and farmland, you’ll be able to reflect on the incredible adventure you’ve just completed. Upon reaching the Momella Gate, you will be greeted by your driver, who will transport you back to your hotel in Arusha.

The trek concludes with your return to Arusha, where you can relax and reminisce about the unforgettable experience on Mount Meru.
