Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
After a hearty breakfast at your hotel, your guide will drive you to the Momella Gate of Arusha National Park. The drive takes about 1.5 hours from Arusha. At the gate, you’ll complete park formalities before starting your trek. Your trek begins at Momella Gate (1,500 meters / 4,920 feet) and continues to Miriakamba Hut (2,500 meters / 8,200 feet). The distance is approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles), and the hike takes around 4 to 5 hours. The first part of the trek takes you through lush montane forests, where you can enjoy the sights of monkeys, birds, and other wildlife. As you ascend, the forest gives way to occasional views of the valleys below. The climb is steady but moderate, helping you gradually acclimatize to the higher elevation. As you approach Miriakamba Hut, the landscape transitions to open moorland, and you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The hut provides basic accommodation, and you will spend the night here, enjoying a well-deserved rest after your first day of trekking.
Trekking Features

- Overnight stay in tents
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
On Day 2, you will continue your trek from Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3,570 meters/11,710 feet), a 5 to 6-hour trek covering about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles). The trail climbs steadily through a mixture of alpine forest and moorland, with occasional breaks in the canopy that provide expansive views of the mountain and the surrounding area.
As you gain altitude, the vegetation changes, and you will start to see the unique alpine plant life of Mount Meru, including giant heathers and lobelias. The higher you go, the more spectacular the views become, especially when looking towards Mount Kilimanjaro to the northeast. The last section of the hike is steeper but offers breathtaking panoramas.
Upon arrival at Saddle Hut, you will have time to rest and acclimatize. The hut is situated just below the crater rim, and it is the final resting point before your summit attempt. After settling in, you will have dinner and rest in preparation for an early start the next day to reach the summit.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Hut (Summit) and Descent to Momella Gate
Day 3 is the most challenging and rewarding part of your trek. You’ll begin your day early, around 2:00 or 3:00 AM, with a summit attempt. The goal is to reach Socialist Hut (4,566 meters / 14,980 feet), the highest point of your trek. The ascent from Saddle Hut to the summit is roughly 6 kilometers (3.7 miles), and it takes 6 to 7 hours to reach the peak. The path to the summit is steep and rocky, but the incredible views and the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the top will make it all worthwhile. As you climb, the landscape around you becomes more dramatic, with views of the Meru Crater, jagged cliffs, and surrounding valleys. Once you reach the Socialist Hut at the summit, you’ll have time to take in the views and savor the achievement. From the summit, you can see the Meru Crater, the remnants of the caldera, and stunning vistas of the surrounding region. After enjoying the summit, you’ll begin your descent back to Saddle Hut, where you’ll have a brief rest. The second part of Day 4 involves descending all the way back to Momella Gate (1,500 meters / 4,920 feet). The descent takes approximately 4 to 5 hours and covers a distance of about 10 kilometers (6 miles). While the descent is easier than the ascent, it can still be challenging due to the steepness of the terrain. Once you reach Momella Gate, your trek will be complete, and you will be transferred back to your hotel in Arusha. In the evening, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Arusha for the night, where you can reflect on the achievement of climbing Mount Meru.
